braga 25 - portuguese capital of culture

More than a static visual identity, the graphic system for Braga 25 – Portuguese Capital of Culture was conceived as a critical communication tool. Rather than creating an image from scratch, the project required the ability to listen to an existing graphic legacy and project it into a new institutional, cultural, and temporal context. The central challenge was to articulate the visual heritage of Braga’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2027 with the city’s newly implemented institutional identity.
The resulting system establishes a balance between recognition and renewal. Built upon inherited principles, the framework was refined into a flexible and coherent visual language, capable of aligning with the new municipal image while preserving public familiarity. Typography, colour, and composition operate as a modular system, allowing the tool to adapt across a wide range of formats, projects, and cultural expressions.
Designed to function across multiple contexts and scales, the system covered institutional communication, event promotion, projects supported by the programme, editorial materials, merchandising, public spaces, and digital media. Throughout the year, this communication engine demonstrated its capacity to adapt to thematic cycles, independent projects, and diverse collaborations, always maintaining a common foundation of recognition and graphic consistency.
